SPIRITUAL APPROACHES TO DEPENDENCE

DRUG, GURU, MEDITATION, STEPS TOWARD AUTONOMY

GENEVA, JUNE 14-15, 1997

REPORT

After a short opening session presenting the work of the IASP, Tony Beerden opened the conference with a lecture on : "Liberation from a dependence, a way toward autonomy". Tony Beerden is a specialist in alcoholism, was the director of the alcoholism center of the Belgium army, and has set up a cognitive and behaviorist program of alcohol detoxification. He is now working in the South of France.

Remo Bernasconi, M.D., a psychiatrist from Switzerland, spoke about his experience of the AA program ("Spiritual approaches to dependence diseases"). He gave a lot of explanations about his work and experience. He has been in contact with Graf Durckheim, a well know spiritual instructor inspired by Zen and Jung.

Alexis Burger, M.D., who is also a psychiatrist from Switzerland, and a disciple of Osho Rajneesh, developed with honesty the question of affective dependency ("Small and big dependencies - how to be free of them?") and of the dependency within a couple relationship.

Tal Schaller, M.D., & his wife, Johanne Razanamahay, gave an energetic talk on "The balance of the four bodies, key of the individual autonomy". Tal Schaller is one of the most well known European holistic doctors and has written many books on the global approach to health, and also on channeling and medicine. His wife, born in Madagascar, is a therapist and has just written a book named "Stand up, little Gods". Together they have recently opened a center for holistic medicine in the South of France.

Lama Denys Teundroup is the spiritual director of one of the main French Buddhist temples, located in the French Alps, near Grenoble. He organized the recent visit of the Dalai Lama to France. He gave a talk on "The liberation from fixations: de-fixation", describing the role of meditation in the resorption of conflicts.

Jean-Marc Mantel, M.D., gave a talk on "The ultimate dependence: the emptiness of the I and the fullness of the Self". He developed the question of dependence toward the I-image, the ideas and beliefs that we have about ourselves, which constitute the wall of a mental prison, at the source of the feeling of loneliness and separateness. This painful feeling is intimately linked to the need to establish a fusional dependence with a person or an object.

On Saturday evening, we were invited to a beautiful concert, offered in a charming church in Lausanne, by a group of choristers who are ex-drug addicts.

The Sunday morning was reserved for workshops and a round table discussion on "accepting the dependence for being free of it"
